Helping Our Pets Endure

Rayna

Hi Kathy,

Attached are a couple pictures of Rayna.  She is about 7-8 months old and very sweet.  She was brought into the clinic on Monday, April 14th.  Her owner said she had been hit by a car on Sunday the day before  around 5 PM.  When brought in, she was not able to use her back legs at all, and scooted around using only her front legs, at which the owner and his kids thought it was funny and laughing at her.  The doc pinched her feet with hemostats and she was not able to feel anything.  At that point, the owner - not even wanting to hear his options of treatments - told us to put her down, even when we told him it could possibly be only temporary.  One look into her sweet face and I knew I couldn't let that happen, not without a chance at recovering. So I asked him to surrender her to me, which he did.

After a couple of x-rays, we saw that she had a fractured disk pinching her spine.  The next day I took her to Dr. Alex Shelley at Elk Creek Animal Hospital where she had back surgery.  Dr. Shelley thought the surgery went well and gave her a 50/50 chance of walking again.  It's been 1 1/2 weeks since her surgery and she now has feeling in both legs, and even able to stand on them (her right leg is much stronger than her left).  Everyday she gets a little better, and we are optimistic that she will be walking again on at least 3 legs, if not on 4.

She is full of life and energy right now, and it is so hard to keep her on restricted confinement.  But we do have a ways to go before I can place her in a forever loving home.  I am checking around in finding a used doggie wheelchair to use for her rehabilitation therapy, so if by chance you know of anyone that may have one and willing to loan it out would be wonderful.
Because we were dealing with a spinal injury, we needed to get her into surgery as soon as possible.  I had no time to try to gather up the $500 we needed. Thank God for credit cards...we charged it in hopes of possibly getting some financial help. We would SO APPRECIATE any help we could get.

Thanks Kathy!
